Planning a trip to Buenos Aires? Good decision.

I'm an American living here for over a year and I have a few simple beginner steps to make your trip easier and cheaper.

1. Book Flights with Points, Not Cash

Round-trip flights to Buenos Aires can be pricey, often costing upwards of $1,500 from most U.S. cities. However, if you’re savvy with your travel points, you can save a fortune. For example, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines offer one-way flights to Buenos Aires for as low as 25,000 points. Using points instead of cash not only saves money but also stretches your travel budget further. If you’re new to points, reach out and I am happy to give you some pointers on how to get started.

American Airlines: One-Way as low as 25,000 points via AA or Alaska Air

United Airlines: One-Way as low as 30,000 points via Avianca Lifemiles

Delta Airlines: One-Way as low as 49,000 points via Delta or Virgin (which often has 30-40% transfer bonuses)

2. Download the Western Union App

Argentinian pesos are best obtained at the “blue rate,” which is significantly better than the official exchange rate. Western Union offers this advantageous rate, meaning you’ll get more pesos for your dollar. Plus, with my referral link, you’ll receive your first transfer fee-free and a $20 Amazon Giftcard, so it'll cost you absolutely nothing. Use the app to send money to yourself and pick it up in cash when you arrive—it’s safe, easy, and incredibly beneficial for maximizing your spending power.

3. Download Rappi

Rappi is your ultimate convenience app in Buenos Aires. Think of it as Uber Eats, but even better. Whether you want restaurant delivery, groceries, or even pharmacy items, Rappi has you covered. They even have Rappi Turbo which guarantees delivery in under 10 minutes!! It's insane.

4. Download Cabify

While Uber is available in Buenos Aires, locals tend to prefer ride-sharing apps like Cabify These apps are often cheaper than Uber and provide reliable service across the city. Download both to compare fares and ensure you’re always getting the best deal on rides. Sometimes it has save me up to 50% per trip.

5. Get Cell Phone Insurance

Theft can be an issue in Buenos Aires, especially in crowded areas. Protect your phone with cell phone insurance before you arrive. Many credit cards, like the Venture X, offer cell phone coverage if you pay your monthly bill using the card. This way, you’re covered in case your phone is lost, damaged, or stolen—giving you peace of mind while you explore the city.

6. Book Your Accomodation in Palermo

Sure, I'm biased as someone who has lived in Palermo my entire time here. But it has everything. It's clean, safe, artsy, and has most of the best restaurants. San Telmo is lovely, but can be a little dicey in the evenings. And while Recoleta and Belgrano are lovely, there just isn't as much happening. Palermo Soho is my favorite, but all the Palermo's are just fine. Pro Tip: If you're staying more than a month, reach out to people on Airbnb and negotiate the price! I've saved thousands of dollars doing this.

Final Thoughts

Buenos Aires is a magical city with so much to offer, but a little preparation goes a long way in making your trip stress-free and enjoyable. By following these few tips, you’ll be well-equipped to make the most of your time in the city.
